Anti-police brutality protests have been taking place in London and more demonstrators stepped out on Thursday October 15 against the tactical police unit, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), also demanding that the force to be reformed.

Occupying a sizeable amount of the UK’s Downing Street, videos shared online show protesters with their placards as they sang in solidarity with Nigerians.

Recall that earlier this week, the first #EndSARS protest was held at the Nigerian High Commission and featured Nigerian celebrities including Wizkid, Seyi Shay and BBNaija;s Mike Edwards.

It was during this demonstration that they learnt that the Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu had dissolved SARS. However, protests have since continued even after the IGP created a new team named Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT).

For over four years, the SARS unit has become notorious in Nigeria, and have carried out stop and search missions, being accused of police brutality in the process as well as extortion.

The #EndSARS hashtag began trending on Twitter recently, even reaching the number one spot last week Friday. It has also reached many international celebrities who have in many ways used their platforms to amplify the ongoing movement.
