Nigeria Now The Hub For Fashion With A Mission

Nigeria fashion designers are fast becoming the centre of attention as the Western world is now realising that we have a lot of untapped talents. Hence international collaborations are beginning to be a new buzz.

The Nigerian fashion industry has grown so much in the last five years and it’s exciting to see that brands, governments and individuals are striving to associate with fashion in the country and at this rate we are projecting a tremendous increase in the country’s level of international exposure with a significant ranking in the world stage in a very short time.

One of such individuals is Nigerian-based, Italian-born Caterina Bortolussi, the lady behind the Kinabuti fashion label. Bortolussi traveled from her Native Italy to the creeks of Bundu Waterside, Eleme and Marine Base Waterside  in Delta State, Nigeria, with a mission dear to her – to harness and support young fashion talents in the Niger Delta region.

Kinabuti was launched in December, 2010 at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in Port Harcourt. Kinabuti’s first and only collection can be described as vibrant and structured, one that is strongly influenced by Bortolussi’s time in Nigeria which she has now made her new home. The collection was modeled by the local designers and photographed in their local living surroundings so that everyone can have a feel of what the label actually stands for.

The project “In Our Ghetto “ according to Bortolussi is aimed at the “style and spirit of the women in the ghetto, which translates my personal style”.

An event tagged “Kinabuti Elite Fashion Nite Out” will be held on April 30th 2011 at Reeds Bar, Lounge and Restaurant in Ikoyi, Lagos. Prices for invites start at one hundred thousand Naira (N100,000.00) while the price for a table starts at one million Naira (N1,000,000.00).

Definitely a good cause to invest your money in, also the night promises to be  fun with beautiful designs on show.

A government also in line with this new buzz and helping with the profile of the Nigeria fashion industry is the Trade Section of the Austrian Embassy. It’s recent collaboration with Nigerian designers in order to establish a trade relationship between the Austrian Lace Manufacturing Industry and the Nigerian Fashion Industry as the Austrian manufacturers realise that their biggest customer base is Nigeria as we have been importing lace fabrics from Austria as far back as the 1960s. It is evident that the Austrian government has realised the talent and market in Nigeria and has positively tapped into this new trend.

In continuation of a previously held exhibition and fashion show in Vienna, Austria, in a project tagged “Austrian Lace – Nigerian Fashion”, four top Nigerian designers will cement this fashion marriage in an event to be held on May 14th 2011 at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos. We will be seeing designs from Ituen Basi, Tiffany Amber, House of Bunor and Vivid Imagination.
