A family and a community try to pull themselves back together after the death of George Floyd

Gianna Floyd, the 6-year-old daughter of late George Floyd has received a full college-age scholarship from the Texas Southern University (TSU).

The University made the announcement on Tuesday night, the day George Floyd was laid to rest in his hometown of Houston.

TSU said on the school’s Facebook page: ‘The Board of Regents of Texas Southern University (TSU) honors the memory of George Floyd on the day that he is laid to eternal rest. Mr. Floyd was a lifelong citizen of the Third Ward and a revered graduate of Jack Yates High School.

‘The Board, in conjunction with the TSU Foundation Board, has approved a fund to provide a full scholarship for Floyd’s beloved daughter, Gianna. TSU’s executive and academic staff will prepare a place for Miss Floyd if she wishes to attend the University.’

Recall that rapper Kanye West offered to pay college tuition for Gianna and also donate $2 million to her father’s family. He also said West will establish a college fund for the 6-year-old.

George Floyd, 46, died on May 25 after former Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. His death has sparked worldwide protests and calls for racial justice.
