Inspired By Fela Anikulapo Kuti! Lifestyle Brand, Kancky Debuts Its Resort ‘16 ‘Road To Kalakuta’ Collection

Nigerian lifestyle fashion brand Kancky unveils its Resort 2016 collection tagged ‘Road To Kalakuta’.

According to the label, “The collection was influenced by the life and achievements of musician, political maverick and human rights activist, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who put not just Nigerian music, but the entire Afrobeat genre on the world map, hence his title ‘Father of Afrobeat’.

The collection mirrors Fela’s use of satire (“Yanga”, “Felagoro”, “Shakara oloje” and so on) as a weapon of social change, and forms the basis for the naming of the pieces in the collection.”

Also inspiration was drawn from Fela’s African (Yoruba) cultural heritage, as well as the Western influences (education) in his life, which the collection interprets by fusing ‘Adire’ (Yoruba name for indigo) with Western fabrics (silk, wool and cotton).

An all natural color palette was used in the form of earth tones (burnt orange, pastel and green) fused with adire (indigo); which emphasizes the brand’s root “an ethereal love for nature”

The icon’s fashion persona was embodied in the collection through the cuts and styles featured in it such as Fela’s trademark form fitting matching shirt and trouser, bell bottoms and sleeves.

Kancky also paid tribute to Fela’s musical background (afrobeat) by creating a makeshift shrine with adire backdrop, African musical instruments and accessories as props for this lookbook shoot. Our muse’s hair and makeup channel the African heritage and Afrocentric values.
