Luxury womenwear brand, Merci Me London owned by Ugandan born designer Mercy Ogole releases its Spring Summer 2016 collection tagged ‘Tribe’.
Sharing the idea behind the collection, Mary stated: “TRIBE. A collection taking inspiration from the rudimental element of tribes and the idea of nomadism – movement and ease of doing so through clothing. This collection is not about fixing clothes in a set way but rather creating fluidity and flexibility for freedom and expression. Allowing for each piece to function in both a practical and a beautiful way. For this collection I have not used any zips, buttons or other fastenings, instead everything is slipped on, tied with itself and or with laces/cord.”
So further added: “What I found interesting about many of the tribes I came across in my research(particularly those in Africa) was this very simple use of textile. In complete opposite towestern costume/dress, tribal dress tends to use minimal tailoring. Instead, and I had come to find this in most tribes, there is a lot of tying and wrapping and draping. I understood then that clothes were as much about function as they were about beauty and that in this technique not only could you express yourself by the way you tied your cloth but also that there was an easiness and practicality to it.
There is also an element of feminine strength and empowerment in this collection, in as much as it allows the female to own her look and while she may own the same piece she will wear it differently. This is an important element for me because I didn’t want to make static collection which dictated a set way of wearing it, instead I wanted to allow for freedom of expression and individuality.
This essentially informed by my idea and sartorial translation of a nomad – a person belonging to a community of people who roam, moving from one place to another and living in different locations. It seams that this concept is not exclusive to tribes, we are all nomads in some sense.”
