Mikel Obi Named Team Nigeria’s Captain For RIO 2016



Chelsea Midfielder and Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi will be leading Team Nigeria to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Mikel was announced as the captain for the country’s delegation of athletes to the Olympic Games while Table Tennis star, Funke Oshonaike was named his assistant.

According to the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, the pair was selected due to ‘their consistency, patriotism and dedication to national assignments.’

“Mikel is a young, patriotic footballer of international status and we believe he will be a role model to the upcoming athletes while Funke Oshonaike is experienced and is one of the oldest athletes in the team.

“We believe that their combined efforts will bring goodwill to Team Nigeria and project the county’s image positively to the world.”
