The Nigerian music industry keeps growing at an exponential rate and not even the many label-artist fallouts and artist-producer fallouts that started in 2012 and continued throughout 2013 has been able to stop that growth, with 2013 being notable for the harvest of endorsements that kept raining the way of the major and sometimes not-too-major players in the music business.
With Olamide, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Davido, Burna Boy amongst others making the most headlines in 2013, we at OnoBello.com have brought you the list of artistes who you should be listening to in 2014. You already know them so they are not so new to the music industry, however we can 2013 major changes for them.
Check out our predictions for 2014!
Harrysongs rewarded Kcee for freeing him from the clutches Questionmark Records where his career had stalled by ghostwriting his album and delivering the massive hit, Limpopo.
After Kcee’s successful album, the focus has shifted to Harrysongs and with his Tribute To Mandela song clinching an award for being the Most Downloaded Callertune on MTN, 2014 might just be his year to blow.
Nigeria’s number one hit-maker of the past two years has grown so much that it is quite unbelievable that he has just one album to his credit. 2014 is going to change all that however, as Wizzy would surely release his much-awaited sophomore album
Baddo finally got the attention his talent deserves in 2013, as the rapper chose not to be satisfied with the moderate success of his YBNL album, incredibly releasing a second album within a year.
4. Burna Boy
Burna Boy had so much success in 2013 that it kind of became a negative, with his failure to win the coveted Next Rated award at the Headies attributed to the fact that he already had an album releases. That should not deter Burna however, as numerous collaborations and more videos should see more buzz for Burna.
A testament to Phyno’s impact in 2013 is that quite contrary to initial expectation that his music would struggle for acceptability as he raps mostly in his native Igbo, fans of the light-skinned Mohawk-donning act cut across all tribes of Nigeria and many are beginning to learn the Igbo language so as to understand his lyrics better. With an album or a Mixtape to come in 2014, Phyno might just go on tp make an Olamide-like impact.
6. Seyi Shay
Not yet a household name like the Tiwa Savages or Omawunmis of this world, Seyi had to work harder in order to make a name for herself in 2013.
Since leaving 323 Entertainment like Tiwa Savage did, Seyi’s star is on the rise and with more hardwork and hit songs, 2014 may just be the year she enters the big league.
2014 marks the 10th year since D’Banj’s breakout single, Tongolo, and the Kokomaster is surely going to celebrate it in a BIG way. With an album to come and so many more campaigns to be championed by the Eja Nla, expect D’Banj to be in the news as often as you listen to music in 2014.
Chidinma Ekile has become a household name in the Nigerian music industry without an album. What then happens if and when she finally releases one? Expect that album to come in 2014 and Chidinma to rule the charts subsequently.
9. Yung Of LOS
|Yung Of LOS|
Yung showed that his talent and ability is abundant in 2013. Expect him to take his career to another level by releasing a full body of work in 2014.
10. Sean Tizzle
Sean Tizzle has released just 5 singles to date but still won the Next Rated award at the Headies. Previous winners of the award include Wande Coal, Davido, Omawunmi, Wizkid and Asa. Anymore needs to be said?
11. Wande Coal
It’s definitely quite outrageous that Wande has just one album to his name in the about 8 years that he first burst onto the Nigerian music scene. Expect that to change in 2014 and if that album is anything as successful as his debut album, expect Wande to rule!
Vector is one of Nigeria’s most gifted rappers and he proved this when he made history by becoming the first (and he remains the only till date) to beat Mode 9 to the Lyricist On The Roll award at the 2012 Headies. His career stalled in the immediate aftermath of that however due to label issues but such that has been resolved and a strong outing in 2014 would remedy that.
13. Kay Switch
Kay Switch is the individual artist whose career has witnessed the most relative growth since the breakup of Mo Hits Records and the only thing stopping the talented artist from achieving a major breakthrough in 2014 is if too much attention is focused on his elder brother, D’Banj to his detriment.
14. BOJ Of DRB Lasgidi
|BOJ Of DRB Lasgidi|
DRB Lasgidi member, BOJ has impressed on his appearances on other artistes’ tracks such as Ajebutter’s Omo Pastor and Show Dem Camp’s Feel Alright. A strong showing of such magnitude on his own works would definitely see him rule in 2014.
