Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State has been shut down following the student’s protest staged about 48 hours ago.
In a report by NAN, the institution was shut down on Tuesday, December 1st, after an emergency meeting held by the school’s Senate.
The students had on Monday, under the leadership of the University’s student union, boycotted lectures in protest against the poor living conditions of their halls of residence, water shortage and epileptic power supply, substandard state of the schools laboratories, poor funding of the educational sector among other issues.
Their protest resulted which in traffic congestion within and around the school premises, isn’t the first of its kind to be staged as the institution had been closed earlier in the year for same reasons. The school authorities were reported to have released a circular then, stating that any form of protest could lead to the cancellation of a semester.
Biodun Olanrewaju, the institution’s Public Relations Officer in an interview with NAN, confirmed the closure of the university adding that the date of resumption would soon be announced. He however disclosed that the school’s convocation scheduled for next week would still hold.
