OB BUZZ: Top 10 Stories That Broke The Internet In 2017
Hello Style Revolutionists, we are excited to bring you something special and exciting as we officially say goodbye to 2017.
Looking back at 2017, it is safe to say that it was a sizzling year filled with scandal, break-ups, weddings and controversies that kept us all talking, some were good, some were bad and some were downright ugly.
This list features both outstanding and shocking moments on social media which shook the entertainment industry and Nigeria as a whole. Every story on this list got Nigerians asking for more.
From Dammy Krane’s Credit Card Saga to Tonto Dikeh & Churchhill’s Marriage breakdown to Mercy Aigbe’s domestic violence saga to the wedding Nigerian’s couldn’t get enough of #BAAD2017 and let’s not forget Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and his infamous statues, these stories and more were trending all over social media and they kept Nigerians talking for days, weeks and even months.
After much deliberation, we bring to you in no particular order, OB TOP 10 STORIES THAT BROKE THE INTERNET IN 2017. We’re sure you’ll remember most of them.
- Dammy Krane’s Credit Card Saga
It was on a Thursday evening when news broke that Nigerian singer Dammy Krane had been arrested in the US for Grand Theft, Credit Card & Identity Fraud alongside a Chukwuebuka Gabriel Ilochonwu. It was quite the shocking turn of events for a lot of his fans.
TapJets, an American private jet service then confirmed that the singer had indeed been arrested for paying for their service with stolen credit cards via their Twitter account.
After being held in jail for a couple of days, he was released on bail, asked to appear back in court. On the 18th of August, Dammy Krane announced he was a free man as he had been cleared of all fraud charges leveled against him.
- Tonto Dikeh & Churchill’s Marriage Saga
Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh and her estranged husband Olakunle Churchill‘s relationship unraveled right before our eyes on social media and this had people talking for months.
It all started when Tonto removed Churchill’s last name from her Instagram, sparking a rumor that there was trouble in the marriage which was a year and a few months old at the time. After some time, the actress publicly confirmed that she and Churchill had split and were now living separately.
Then came the emotional interview with Azuka Ogujiuba of Media Room Hub, where Tonto Dikeh revealed that she had allegedly been abused by Churchill, who was also allegedly involved in extra-marital affairs.
Churchill followed his ex-wife’s footsteps in an exclusive interview with Toast Media Magazine where he denied ever cheating on her or harming her.
In a shocking twist, Azuka Ogujuiba, who previously interviewed the actress came out to say that the actress had lied with accusations of domestic violence against Mr. Churchhill and later followed up by releasing a video which showed Tonto Dikeh being violent towards her ex-husband.
Last we heard of the pair, Tonto said she was in the process of suing her ex.
- Mercy Aigbe & Lanre Gentry Domestic Violence Saga
Another Nollywood actress who had a trying time earlier this year was Mercy Aigbe. Mercy revealed that she had been emotionally and physically abused by her ex-husband, Lanre Gentry, supporting her claim with videos and photos and boy was it a shocker.
Not only did the actress share photos and videos of her bruised and bloody face, she also had a tell-all interview with Broadway TV where she revealed the reason why she had endured and stayed in her marriage as long as she had.
Her ex-husband, Lanre Gentry at first denied the accusations claiming that the photos released by Mercy were from a movie the actress was filming but later issued a public apology in order for “peace to reign”.
- Banky W & Adesua Etomi’s Fairytale Wedding
2017, was the year industry sweethearts, BankyW & Adesua Etomi gave us the hope of living our own fairytales, the two went from a major role as the lead characters in Ebony Life’s “The Wedding Party” to announcing their engagement, which came as a shock to Nigerians, who had previously been unaware of the couple’s involvement in real life.
When the couple first announced their engagement, we all thought it was for a music video or a publicity stunt for a movie, the realization that this was indeed a real proposal that was going to lead to a real wedding shook social media and the country as a whole. We can’t forget how our timeline was filled with photos of the two lovebirds that day.
Not long after the proposal, the introduction followed and social media was introduced to the hashtag which was going to rule 2017; #BAAD2017.
The star-studded traditional wedding took place in Lagos and had the whole of Lagos in attendance especially through social media, our social media feed was kept busy all day with posts from the wedding. It was impossible to go online and not see at least one post from the wedding.
After the traditional wedding, there was the court wedding during the week before the pair jetted off to Cape Town, South Africa for the white wedding, which was truly a magical and spectacular affair.
- Mr. Eazi Vs. Nigerians
This year it seemed as though Mr. Eazi could do nothing right were Nigerians were concerned. The singer was dragged on social media so many times thank to his penchant to choose Ghana over Nigeria.
In January, the “Pour Me Water” singer shared his honest opinion via Twitter about Ghanaian music influencing Nigerian music causing his Nigerian fan base to lash out at him and accuse him of biting the hands that made him.
Months later, Eazi appeared as a guest on Reggae Recipe, a show on UK online radio, Capital Xtra, this time claiming credit as the pioneer of the Ghanaian/Nigerian music fusion. Trust Nigerians to come at him on Social Media with the most scathing remarks, some even referred to his career as dead and his timeline knew no peace.

Mr. Eazi is still officially in the bad books of Nigerians but he recently said in an interview with HipTv that Nigerians had no true hate for him and were only teasing with the jabs on social media.

- TBoss & Kemen’s BBNaija Sex Drama
Former Big Brother Naija housemates Ekemini Ekerette more popularly known as Kemen and Tokunbo Idowu popularly known as TBoss were shrouded in scandal when Kemen got disqualified from the Big Brother House for allegedly touching TBoss inappropriately while she slept.
The video which was all anyone could talk about for a while made the rounds on the internet and had Nigerians picking sides although most were in support of TBoss.
However, the pair has since reconciled thanks to an interview and peace meeting organized by Journalist, Azuka Ogujiuba of Media Room Hub and Charles Opaleke, at a night-club in Abuja.
- Toke Makinwa & the 70-Year-old Sugar Daddy aka FF
As the year went on, media personality Toke Makinwa became entangled in Sugar daddy rumours.
The popular socialite was called out for allegedly dating a 70-year-old billionaire who was later discovered to be none other than oil magnate and chairman of Pan Ocean Oil Nigeria Limited, Chief Festus Fadeyi, who apparently sponsors her lavish lifestyle.
Toke received a lot of backlash from Nigerians following the reveal of her sugar daddy and the war his children openly declared against her on Social media as they asked that she “Leave their father alone”.
According to TheCapital.ng, Fadeyi’s children are very angry with the way he splurges on Toke. They believe he is squandering too much money on her at a time when he owes Skye bank an estimated N196 billion.
Makinwa is yet to respond to any of the allegations leveled against her.
- Rochas Okorocha & The Statues
Then the governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha unveiled a statue of the South African president, Jacob Zuma, and the internet went wild. Nigerians wanted to know why Imo State would spend billions of naira to erect a statue of a South African president, who was being investigated for corruption at the time.
It was soon discovered by a Twitter user that Governor Rochas Okorocha had a few more statues to unveil in an area of Imo State which had been dubbed the “Hall of Fame”
Rochas showed no remorse for his erection of the Zuma statue and soon unveiled another statue of former Liberian president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and not long after that one of Ghanaian president, Nana Akufo-Addo.
The governor remains the butt of many jokes on social media and is always linked to the erection of one statue or the other by TwitterNG.
- Ebuka Obi-Uchendu’s Wardrobe Malfunction at BBNaija
The ladies were happy with this one.
While hosting the last season of Big Brother Naija, media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction.
The able host took to the stage in a dashing Mai Atafo ensemble, the only problem was his eggplant was screaming out for attention from his pants. Uh-oh!
Viewers could look at nothing else during the broadcast and all of TwitterNG was buzzing about Ebuka’s distracting “gift”
Noticing the online commotion, Ebuka took to his Twitter page to apologize for the “distraction”

- Bisola Aiyeola & Thin Tall Tony
During the last season of Big Brother Naija, former housemates Bisola Aiyeola and Thin Tall Tony became involved in a romantic relationship which had everyone talking because TTT was happily married with kids and he had hidden this from Bisola during their time together in the house.
Trust Nigerians to do their investigations and find out about TTT’s marriage before he got out of the house. The housemate received a lot of criticism from TwitterNG, as Nigerians were not impressed with the fact that he was married yet frolicking with another lady on live television.
Bisola, who loved Thin Tall Tony enough to cry over his eviction was obviously heartbroken when she discovered his deception and did not speak to him for a long time after leaving the house because she felt betrayed.
