OB Top Box Office Hit Movies of 2017 (Nollywood & Hollywood)

Hello Style Revolutionists, we are excited to bring you something special and exciting as we officially say goodbye to 2017.

A lot of us love to watch the movies, for entertainment purposes, for fun or sometimes to learn something new either way the year 2017 was a good one for the creative industry with a lot of top movie releases and glamorous movie premieres. The year 2017 also recorded the expected flop here and there but that’s not what this list is all about. This list is celebrating the movies that brought in the big bucks and also kept the audience entertained in both Nollywood and Hollywood.

There were so many amazing themes in our Nollywood storytelling last year and the industry also showed a lot of improvements from comedy to drama to romance and even action, Nollywood had a lot to offer the audience in 2017.

As for the Hollywood movies, they impressed us with their ability to transport us to different worlds and exciting places that immersed us in amazing possibilities, whether it was romance, action, thriller or fantasy. These movies kept us on the edge of our seats until the very end.

This list is therefore made up of amazing movies released in 2017 that wowed us and also managed to hold its own when competing against other movies at the Box Office level thereby bringing in tons of money for the producers.This was certainly a hard list to put together due to the endless stream of incredible movies we were blessed with in 2017.

After much deliberation, we bring to you in no particular order, OB TOP 10 Box Office Hit Movies of 2017 (Nollywood & Hollywood)


1.           The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai


The ELFIKE collective, a collaboration between EbonyLife Films, FilmOne, Koga Studios and Ink Blot, tried to make lightning strike twice with ‘The Wedding Party 2; Destination Dubai‘ which was released in cinemas on the 15th of December 2017.

It’s safe to say that they succeeded as the film raked in over 73 million Naira on its opening weekend alone thereby breaking the N36 million record set by the first part of the movie, ‘The Wedding Party,’ on its opening weekend last year.story about two people genuinely in love,  about the unnecessary interference of family members, and finally the hassles of inter-cultural marriage.

The movie follows the story of two people who are genuinely in love, played by Enyinna Nwigwe and Daniella Down, yet dealing with the unnecessary interference of family members, and finally the hassles of inter-cultural marriage which threaten to destroy their happiness.

Aside from the two leads, this movie sees the return of most of the original cast members including Banky W, Adesua Etomi, Daniella Down, RMDAli Baba, Ireti Doyle, Enyinna Nwigwe, Beverly Naya, Ikechukwu OnunakuSomkele Idhalama and more, while also introducing a host of new characters.

The movie was written by Chinaza Onuzo, directed by Niyi Akinmolayan and produced by Priscilla Nwanah.

2.           Banana Island Ghost


Biola Alabi’s movie, ‘Banana Island Ghost’, B.I.G, which was released in cinemas on the 4th of August 2017 soared to the top, grossing N35 million in its opening week in the Nigerian box office and the movie continued to generate buzz and engagement following that.

The movie, which was written and directed by BB Sasore, tells the story of a ghost, Patrick (Patrick Diabuah), who doesn’t want to go to heaven because he doesn’t have a soulmate. He convinces God to give him three days to fall in love and in granting his request, God pairs him with the hard to love Ijeoma (Chigul).

As a ghost, Patrick can see everyone, touch everything, be anywhere he wants, but he can only be seen by one person; his soulmate. Ijeoma has just three days to get 18 million Naira to prevent the bank from reclaiming and selling her father’s house in Banana Island to a billionaire, Mr. King (Ali Nuhu).

The movie balances humor and poignancy, while successfully avoiding clichés. The actors especially first-time lead actors Chigul and Patrick Diabuah do well to deliver an impressive performance.

However, the special effects were what helped to bring the entire movie to life giving it a vibrant action-packed feel.

3.           10 Days in Sun City


Nigeria meets South Africa in this near-fatal adventure to a luxury resort. Much like his previous two films, 30 Days in Atlanta and A Trip To Jamaica, actor and executive producer, Ayo Makun, makes his return as the popular character, Akpos.But this time, he is en route to South Africa, and specifically Sun City.

The star-studded comedy movie features A-list movie cast from Nigeria such as AY, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Adesua Etomi, Mercy Johnson, Falz The Bahd Guy, 2Baba, Gbenro Ajibade, Juliet Ibrahim, Uti Nwachukwu, Fathia Balogun, Freeze, Annie Idibia to name a few. The movie also features Miguel Nunez Jr from Hollywood coupled with a talented and hilarious South African cast that includes Thenjiiwe Moseley, Amanda Du Pont, Celeste Ntuli and lots more.

The movie which was released on the 23rd of June 2017 was a massive box office success like its predecessors and Nigerians can’t wait to see what else AY has up his sleeve.

4.           Hakkunde


Hakkunde is an intriguing story of a young graduate who battles everything (including love, family, discrimination, drug abuse, culture, tradition, and self) on his journey to self-discovery and actualization.

The movie, which was directed by Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award-Winning Cinematographer, Oluseyi Asurf, is characterized by actions and reactions that defines the everyday Nigerian society, with its ups and downs and with a particular focus on the life of a job-hunting graduate “Akande”, played by Kunle Idowu,who found himself in totality while searching for a job, and a better life.

This inspiring story was written by Asurf Oluseyi & Gift Imafidon who went on to enlist a very talented cast which included Kunle Idowu (Frank Donga), Toyin Abraham, Rahama Sadau, Maryam Booth and more to bring their story to life.
Hakkunde hit cinemas nationwide on the 4th of August 2017.

5.           Slow Country


Slow Country, which hit cinemas Nationwide on the 5th of May 2017, follows the story of Kome (Ivie Okujaye), a homeless teenage mother who resorts to working for a ruthless drug king pin, Tuvi (Sambasa Nzeribe) as a prostitute and trafficker. After seven years in service and with the return of her ex-boyfriend Osas (Tope Tedela), she is ready to call it quits but Tuvi is not ready to let go of his most trusted cash cow.

The movie which is a hybrid of the romance genre and action genre gave us strong actors who kept us engaged with their strong performances. The movie also did a good job in capturing the intensity of the fight scenes which were elevated by locations and scenery that convey danger and chaos.

The movie also starred Majid Michel, Folaremi Agunbiade, and Victor Eraibe.

  1.  Beauty and The Beast


Beauty and The Beast, which was released in cinemas on the 17th of March 2017, is an adaptation of the fairy tale about a monstrous-looking prince and a young woman who fall in love directed by Bill Condon and written by Stephen Chbosky.

The film which had the likes of  Kevin Kline, Ewan McGregorEmma ThompsonStanley TucciIan McKellenAudra McDonaldEmma WatsonJosh GadDan StevensLuke Evans and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in starring roles made 1.264 billion USD at the Box Office.

2.           Star Wars VIII, The Last Jedi


The Star Wars franchise returned with episode 8 directed and written by Rian Johnson based on characters created by George Lucas on the 15th of December 2017.

In this installment, Rey (Daisy Ridley) develops her newly discovered abilities with the guidance of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), who is unsettled by the strength of her powers. Meanwhile, the Resistance prepares for battle with the First Order.

3.           Wonder Woman


Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, Princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that’s raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

The movie which was directed by Patty Jenkins with the story and screenplay by Zack Snyder and Allan Heinberg respectively was released in cinemas on the 2nd of June and made 821.9 million USD at the Box Office.

The action-packed movie also stars Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, Said Taghmaoui, Ewen Bremner and many more.

4.            It 


Now, this was one movie that had everyone watching their backs whether they knew it or not.

The horror movie ‘IT‘ was directed by Andy Muschietti and written by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga, and Gary Dauberman.

The movie which is based on a Stephen King novel follows the story of seven young outcasts in Derry, Maine, who had to face their worst nightmare — an ancient, shape-shifting evil that emerges from the sewer every 27 years to prey on the town’s children. The friends come together over the course of one horrifying summer, to overcome their own personal fears and battle the murderous, bloodthirsty clown known as Pennywise.

The movie, which starred  Bill Skarsgård, Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lilis, Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Chosen Jacobs and many more, made 698.1 million USD at the Box Office.

5.         Dunkirk


This historical drama/thriller written and directed by Christopher Nolan retells the story of the May 1940 World War 2 Dunkirk evacuation.

In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, and trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated.

This movie which has been receiving a lot of international acclaim transports its audience to a completely different time and leads the viewers to create emotional attachments to the characters over time.

The movie starring,  Fionn WhiteheadBarry KeoghanMark Rylance and others, was released in cinemas on the 21st of July 2017 and made a total of 525.6 million USD at the box office.
