President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, 10th December, attended the funeral service of late Mathieu Kerekou, the former President of the Republic of Benin, held in the country’s capital, Cotonou.
During the ceremony, Buhari who spoke on behalf of other African leaders, described late Kerekou as, “a father of his nation and founding father of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).” He described the late General as a leader who was loved by his people and advocated for international cooperation, who will be greatly missed within and outside Benin Republic.
President Buhari who was accompanied by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, while addressing members of the deceased family, his wife Mrs Margaret Kerekou, President Boni Yayi and the citizens of Republic of Benin, urged them all to be consoled by the belief that late Kerekou lived a very fulfilled life in service to his country, and had gone to have a well deserved rest from his hard work on earth.
