Senate Confirms Tanko As Chief Justice of Nigeria


The Nigerian Senate has on Wednesday, confirmed the appointment of Justice Tanko Muhammad as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The upper chamber of the Nigeria’s bicameral legislature questioned Muhammad on corruption, administration of criminal justice and the poor funding of the judiciary.

Prior to this time, President Muhammadu Buhari had on July 11, 2019, forwarded a letter to the Senate requesting that Muhammad be confirmed the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The President said the nomination was sequel to the recommendation by the National Judicial Council.

Muhammad has been acting CJN since January 25 after the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen from office over alleged corrupt practices.
