Nigerian fashion designer Amaka Osakwe, Creative Director of Maki Oh flies the African flag high on the global fashion stage.
Recently, she was invited by the First Lady of The United States of America, Michelle Obama, to attend the ‘Fashion Education Workshop’ held at the White House, Osakwe became the first African designer to be to achieve this fete.
Now the designer has released her Maki Oh Spring/Sumer 2015 collection. According to Style.com, Osakwe’s latest collection is the stuff of dreams.
Many of the shapes were familiar territory for Osakwe: the boxy top, the midi, tapered shirtdress—it’s the materials she’s mixed up. Silk has always been a standby, but here she added rich cottons and dense, spongy honeycomb mesh. These clothes felt urgent, elegant, and wholly wearable, the kind of pieces women are sure to connect with, whether they know the backstory or not.
