The Show-Stealing Hair & Makeup Trends From Arise Fashion Week 2019
Another runway showcase, another outpouring of beauty looks to get us inspired for the next couple of months.
Arise Fashion Week served some memorable hair and makeup moments this year’s edition. From Turfah to Deola Sagoe, there was no shortage of inspiration. For Autumn/Winter 2019, designers experimented with everything — slicked back, birdcage veils, bold edgy lips, cobalt blue eye shadows, and even traditional markings. Innovation and pushing boundaries in beauty seemed to be at the heart of most major collections.
Here are our main takeaways from the season:
The ruby red statement lip is a classic look that has been popping up all over the runways. It is a gorgeous look that has been mixed with many other makeup trends. Turfah and Lulu kicked off Day 1, sending out models in a vibrant blend of colours. The highlight of their shows, however, were the matte red lips in fiery red.
Sleek Hair
Sleek is chic. Just ask Andrea Iyamah or Bridget Awosika. Whether pushed back or classic low cut, the Arise Fashion Week 2019 runways were full of models with slicked down hair. While Andrea Iyamah added her own spin to the style with fluffy ponytail and low cuts, Style Temple opted for neat center-parted slicked back dos. Bridget Awosika came through more of a classic having the models’ hair squeezed slick into a tight ponytail.
Hair Embellishments
Studded and bejeweled hair (and headgears) championed the ‘more is more’ mantra. Gold, silver and even flower crowns adorned everything, from models’ ears to their braids. During Style Temple’s presentation, rhinestone pins and crown appeared as hair accessories while Maison ARTC’s chose to display his head pieces which featured a unique pearl headpiece. Over-the-top? Maybe. Fabulous? Absolutely. The message is clear: Bling is in.
Heavy Liner & Eyeshadow
Bringing the fashion week’s drama to the fold were dark shadows and spring-inspired bright lids. Cat eyes were extended to incorporate larger portions of the face, while several bold shades were sported to create the dramatic effect. Deola Sagoe, for instance, upped the sultry element during her presentation show by layering classic smoky eyes with bronze and rose gold eye shadows. David Tlale served another scoop of smoky eye inspo, having orange accents.
Loose Afro & Voluminous Hair
In contrast to the sleek, few designers celebrated voluminous, delightfully loose Afro hair. with a selection of models wearing over-the-top fluffy curls.
Edgy Lips
CLAN, Nkwo and David Tlale opted for the grunge, deep black lip against matte minimalist skin. The models’ swept-back ponytails kept the focus on the lips and the dreamy clothes for a romantic, understated result.
Purple-pink Highlighter
It was all about holographic purple-pink highlighter traded across the cheekbones during Mowalola presentation While super-glossy skin with a sheer wash of fresh pink color on the eyes finished off their looks.
Neutral Nudes
One of spring’s biggest trends is shaping up to be super-glossy skin with sheer, minimal makeup done in neutral and nude shades, like seen during Style Temple‘s showcase.
Graphic Eyeliner & Glittery Lips
Models during Deola Sagoe’s showcase were accented with glittery lips which was well-coordinated with the statement designs.
