In all careers all over the world, there are highs and lows but in no industry is this trend more demonstrated like in the entertainment industry – the music part in particular.
In a world where one major hit song is enough to catapult an artiste into the world of stardom regardless such individual’s previous track record, a lack of continuity and consistency could also lead to a fall from grace also regardless of past glorious efforts, especially as there are always countless wannabes ready to step into the limelight.
In this article, we spotlight some Nigerian artistes who have previously ruled our playlists but are curiously missing from current ones.
‘If you help me Ego, make you tell am I no know…”. With these lines, Osayamen Nosa Donald a.k.a Djinee announced his entry into the Nigerian music industry with his powerful hit track, Ego in 2005. Blessed with a powerful yet soulful tenor voice and challenged by his daily life encounters, Djinee went on to win multiple awards and nominations for his subsequent releases such as ‘I No Dey Shame’ in 2007, Lade in 2008 and ‘Overkillin’ in 2009, after having assisted M.I on his hit single, ‘Safe’.
After all these successes, the album was set to be released but alas, 5 years after ‘Overkillin’, Djinee has not been heard from. Where are you Djinee? What are you up to?
Jay Sleek, real name Jerry L. Shelika is credited with helping the legendary Tuface Idibia’s career resurrect from a mini-recession by producing hit tracks like ‘Enter The Place’, ‘Implication’ and ‘Only Me’, perhaps adding an ironical twist to the fact that he has been relatively unheard from since he was rewarded for his exploits with ‘Tubaba’ by being signed to D’Banj’s DB Records when the Kokomaster needed a top-notch producer to help with his career after falling out with Don Jazzy.
With hit tracks like ‘Private Trips’, ‘Oluwa Noni’, ‘Water Bam Bam’ and ‘Omotena’ produced for Wande Coal, Wizkid, Timaya and Solid Star respectively, signing up with D’Banj was supposed to cement Jay Sleek’s reputation as a super-producer, but that has not happened, as he has been overshadowed by the fast-rising Deevee. He was reported to be dropping an album an album late last year but even that has not materialized. Where are you Jay Sleek? What are you up to?
With ‘Fimile baby fimile’! and ‘If you wine for me’, Karounwi Olakunle a.k.a Kas showed that he was a super-talented producer and an artiste who knew just what it takes to get the club bumping. After releasing the remix to ‘Fimile’ which featured legends, D’Banj and Tuface Idibia on the same track for the first time, Kas was expected to go to dominate the airwaves but that sadly remains the highest peak he has reached since. Where are you Kas? What are you up to?
Lanre Dabiri alias Eldee is not a stranger to hiatuses from the spotlight in the Nigerian music industry, as he previously left the country in 2002 for the United States and once again, he has been off the radar in recent times. The good thing is that whenever he has returned, he has always done so with a bang! Where are you Eldee? What are you up to?
Nigeria’s undisputed international music queen, Bukola Elemide a.k.a Asa has an undeniable well of talent to draw from and needs no introduction after dominating Nigerian and international music airwaves from 2007-2010. However, since releasing ‘Beautiful Imperfection’ in 2010, we haven’t heard anything from ‘The Hawk’.
However, it is taken for granted that whenever she comes back from her hiatus, Asa would rule the airwaves once more. However while we wait, we ask, where are you Asa? What are you up to?
